First Round Reaction Blog

So I’m going to try to blog this first round as I watch it but it might get interrupted.  It’s expected to be Jared Goff and then Carson Wentz then the fun starts with San Diego at 3.  I’m watching the NFL Network feed not ESPN because I can’t do this if I want to kill Chris Berman all night and Mike Mayock is way cooler than Kiper.  Here we go…the Rams are on the clock.

Los Angeles Rams Pick

Jared Goff   QB

He’s way better than Nick Foles or Case Keenum but this team is ready to roll so he better get it together.  Goff has some transition he needs to work on but he’s pretty good.

Philadelphia Eagles Pick

Carson Wentz   QB

This is the guy Doug Pederson wanted and he just hitched his wagon to him for better of worse.  The kid knows how to win, he was the starting QB on the last two FCS Championship teams at North Dakota St. but they never lost a FCS Championship while he was there.  Philly is a tough place to play and a hard fan base to please.  What to do with Sam Bradford now?

Ezekiel Elliott is wearing mid drift baring button down shirt?…okay yes I did just see that.

San Diego Chargers Pick

Joey Bosa   DE

And we are off…didn’t see that coming.  Bosa was supposed to be dropping.  Not a great fit but he can make a transition.  They need pass rushing for sure, they can line Bosa up either on the same side of the defense as Ingram as a DE or opposite him as an OLB.  I wouldn’t have passed on Ramsey or Tunsil for him but going into last year he was the #1 player for the draft.

Hey I got the first two right!!!!

If the Cowboys take Ezekiel Elliott the Jaguars are the luckiest team ever.

Dallas Cowboys Pick

Ezekiel Elliott   RB

Seriously? How many RBs do you need.  The offense better score 40 pts a game because the defense is hurting.  I love Elliott and he’ll be unreal behind that offensive line but if Romo injures his collarbone again the team will be right back here.  If Romo is healthy Elliott is the Offensive Rookie of the Year leader but they still might go 8-8 with that D.

Jacksonville Jaguars Pick

If they didn’t run Jalen Ramsey’s name up to the podium I don’t know what they are doing.

Jalen Ramsey   DB

The Jags are having a hell of an off season.  Their defense should be transformed with last year’s rookie Dante Fowler coming back from an injury, the addition of DL Malik Jackson, CB Prince Amukamara and S Tayshaun Gipson and now Ramsey.  Best player in the draft goes 5th?  Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.  Ramsey is my early pick for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

I was right last year when I said CB Marcus Peters of the Chiefs would be defensive rookie of the year.

Right now Ozzie Newsome is smiling because he can take Laremy Tunsil or DeForest Buckner and he’s going to end up with a fantastic starter.

Baltimore Ravens Pick

Ronnie Stanley   OT

Okay, not Tunsil.  A bit surprising for me because I like Tunsil but I have read a few things that teams have been questioning him off-the-field.  Stanley is a top player and he’s a solid citizen.

Mayock just threw out the “dancing bear” moniker.  Love it.  He’s not quite that good of a mauler but he is a bit better than Tunsil so I’ll give it to him.

Tunsil supposedly taking a bong hit on video and it was posted on Twitter.  Yikes.

Deion stop hitting on Stanley on stage, wait until later.

San Francisco 49ers

DeForest Buckner    DE

They like their Oregon DEs after taking Armstead last year.  Buckner is a better player and will start right away.  How far will Tunsil fall, he would have been a nice pickup but it could be a tough night for Tunsil.  I like Buckner and he’s a great scheme fit.

Cleveland is trading out of #8 but it’s not to Miami for Elliott.

Cleveland trades with Tennessee

Tennessee gets Tunsil at 8 instead of 1 and Cleveland can get Treadwell

Tennessee Titans

Jack Conklin   OT

Tunsil is going to spiral at this point.  Conklin is a solid player.  Lewan and Conklin are Mariota’s body guards.  Nice move up and down the board by Tennessee and getting what they need.

Tampa Bay is trading out of #9

Chicago Bears moving up ahead of Giants.  Has to be Tunsil

Chicago Bears Pick

Leonard Floyd   OLB

Wow.  Didn’t see Floyd going this high but he fits their need quite well.  Floyd will bring the heat off the edge.  He’s a pass rusher they really need and Vic Fangio will figure out how to use him.

The Giants should grab Tunsil so they can flip Erick Flowers to RT.

New York Giants Pick

Eli Apple   CB

Wow.  I had them taking a CB but it was Vernon Hargreaves.  Apple is raw but has great skills. 3 Buckeyes in the top 10 with a few more to go in the first round.

That’s the Top 10 and I’m going to take a quick break.  Where will Tunsil fall too, where will Myles Jack go?  I’ll be back.

Okay lets get caught up.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Pick

Vernon Hargreaves III   CB

They need a CB and trading down and still getting a starting CB is pretty good.  Brent Grimes and Hargreaves make for a short but feisty duo.

New Orleans Saints Pick

Sheldon Rankins   DL

Rankins is my dark horse pick for Defensive Rookie of the Year now that I know where he’s going.  He’s going to play a lot and help Cameron Jordan get to the QB but he’s really good and I love this choice.

Miami Dolphins Pick

Laremy Tunsil   OT

There are character concerns but if he is straightened out he’s huge value.  Brandon Albert can’t stay healthy and if he does he can play RT.  Tunsil needs work run blocking but he’s an athletic kid that can learn.  Strange how far he fell, it has to be more than just the reported bong smoking video.

Oakland Raiders Pick

Karl Joseph   SS

This is the first real reach, it’s not that Joseph is bad but a safety has to be REALLY good to go this high and Joseph is nice but he’s a 2nd rounder.  I will say the Raiders need safety help so that makes sense and since no one was very good beyond Jalen Ramsey Joseph gets over valued.

Cleveland Browns

Corey Coleman   WR

They made another smart move passing on Paxton Lynch.  I like Treadwell better but Coleman immediately becomes the best WR on their roster.  At least RGIII gets a fellow Baylor Bear.  Mike Mayock just compared Coleman to Percy Harvin and I think he meant it as a compliment.

The Lions should be sprinting Taylor Decker’s name to the podium.

Detroit Lions Pick

Taylor Decker   OT

What a lucky and great pick for he Lions.  They have ignored OT too long.  I think Decker plays RT and they leave Riley Reiff on the left side.  Reiff is in the last year of his contract so they may need Decker to move to LT eventually but keeping both is the best idea.  Matthew Stafford is the happiest guy in the world tonight.

Atlanta Falcons Pick

Keanu Neal   S

I’ve heard Neal was moving up late but seriously?  This is a serious reach at this point.  Way too much talent left elsewhere even if you are reaching to fill a huge need.  Darron Lee and Reggie Ragland are still here.  Don’t like this pick.

Indianapolis Colts Pick

Ryan Kelly   C

They have to protect Andrew Luck and they need help in the running game.  Kelly is a day one starter and becomes Luck’s best friend.  Good pick, really like it.

Please let Paxton Lynch go to one of the next two teams.  Bills or Jets I don’t care.

Buffalo Bills Pick

Shaq Lawson   DE

Such a good value here. Lawson is really good and this is a safer choice than Spence.  I think it’s a great choice so of course I hate it.  He’s not a Pro Bowl type of guy but he’s solid and that’s what they need.

Come on Jets take Paxton Lynch.

New York Jets Pick

Darron Lee   OLB

The Ohio St. show continues.  The reason Urban Meyer is joining the NFL Network’s coverage tomorrow and not tonight is because he needs to hug too many guys tonight.  I love Lee so I hate this pick too.  Damn.

The Buckeyes are averaging one player every 4 picks.  Seriously, that’s crazy.

The Texans just traded up a spot.

Houston Texans Picks

Will Fuller   WR

I don’t like Fuller in the first round because he doesn’t have great hands.  Treadwell still on the board and Josh Doctson are both on the board.  If they can fix his bad hands its a good pick otherwise not so much.

Washington picked up a 6th round pick next year for dropping one spot so the Texans could take a guy the Redskins didn’t want.  Nice move

Washington Redskins Pick

Josh Doctson   WR

They dropped a spot and got the better WR, yep good move.  Not sure Doctson is a better choice than a DT they really needed; Jarran Reed, A’Shawn Robinson or Vernon Butler but okay.  Kirk Cousins is happy.

Did the Vikings just luck into the perfect WR and the best one in the draft, Laquon Treadwell?

Minnesota Vikings Pick

Laquon Treadwell   WR

The perfect compliment to Stefon Diggs and the best WR in this draft.  Big, physical and a huge red zone threat.  He will make Teddy Bridgewater very happy.

The Bengals have to be a bit upset because the top 4 WRs are off the board, no one was expecting the Redskins to grab one.

Cincinnati Bengals Pick

William Jackson III   CB

Well they couldn’t get great value at WR here so good job not reaching for one.  Michael Thomas and Tyler Boyd could be around in the second round.  Jackson is fantastic value here at 24.  They could use some depth and when your division has Joe Flacco and Ben Roethlisberger you can never have too many CBs.  Nice recovery.

Pittsburgh Steelers Pick

Artie Burns   CB

They need a CB but they must really like him because he was a 2nd round talent.  Mackensie Alexander falls like I thought but Burns doesn’t do much for me.  They need the position for sure and they have to be upset the Bengals stole Jackson.  He will probably be better than the guys they have so there’s that.

Broncos are moving up…calling an upset…Connor Cook.

Denver Broncos Pick

Paxton Lynch   QB

Guess I was wrong…a lot.  Elway not only took a QB but he took Lynch.  I did thing someone would trade into the back end of the 1st round to get Lynch so I guess I was sorta right on that.  I only liked the Broncos because they had Peyton Manning, now I can officially go back to hating them (not because of Lynch I have no reason to hate him).

Green Bay should be sprinting Reggie Ragland’s card up to the podium.  Save Clay Matthews and move him back outside.  Ragland is a stud.

Green Bay Packers Pick

Kenny Clark   DT

I like Clark but his value wasn’t this high and Ragland would have been the better pick.  If they wanted a DT I like Robinson, Reed and Butler better.  Clark can play but they must really like him to grab him above those guys.

San Francisco is coming up to Kansas City’s spot…another QB?  Maybe Myles Jack finally?

San Francisco 49ers Pick

Joshua Garnett   OG

Seriously? An offensive guard? They traded up for a OG? What?  Umm…I have no idea what just happened.  Not even the top OG in the draft.  He’s a roadgrader but this doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Arizona Cardinals Pick

Robert Nkemdiche   DT

Someone pulled the trigger on the biggest risk in the draft.  Nkemdiche is a gigantic walking red flag but he’s a talented athlete.   I don’t like him because I don’t think he dominates like he should considering how talented he is.  I wonder what the over/under is in Vegas on his first drug suspension.

Carolina Panthers Pick

Vernon Butler   DT

I love Butler, he’s quietly a fantastic player but it doesn’t make a lot of sense when they have Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short inside at DT.  They needed a DE like Kevin Dodd or Emmanuel Ogbah if they wanted to go d-line.  How about Jason Spriggs, Germain Ifedi or Cody Whitehair for the line?

Here we go with the end of the first round.

Seattle Seahawks Pick

Germain Ifedi    OT

Hey I got the right player with the right team even if it came a few picks later.  Ifedi is going to get good coaching from Tom Cable.  They had to get an offensive lineman.  He may need to be a RT but they need that too.

The first round is over and I’m surprised by some guys still on the board.  Myles Jack’s knee must look like swiss cheese on an MRI because he’s a true talent.  The 3 Alabama guys that didn’t go also surprises me; Jarran Reed, A’Shawn Robinson and Reggie Ragland.  I hope they keep dropping so the Patriots can take advantage of others making mistakes.  This was fun, I probably won’t be able to pull it off tomorrow night for rounds 2 and 3 but I’ll try to get my draft analysis done as soon as possible.  I start class again next week so it sort of depends on my class workload.  Enjoy the rest of the draft.
